My Anthropology Class

Hey guys, I have a friend who asked me about my Texting and Talking class, Anthropology 2320, and I loved it.  "Is mediated communication really changing the way we measure to one another? How do we evaluate the information we encounter in mediated and face to face spheres of interaction?"  These were the questions answered in my Anthropology Class.

We read one article, #Ferguson: Digital Protest, Hashtag Ethnography, and the Racial Politics of Social Media in the United States by Yamira Bonilla and Jonathan Rosa, where we learned mediated communication is just as powerful as face to face communication, especially in racial instances where #BlackLivesMatter helped in bringing racial injustice to the forefront using Twitter.  Twitter is known for hashtags, which help as a search engine.  Whether funny or serious, hashtags can become conversation starters with your friends and family.

Texting is also a form of mediated communication.  In class, we discussed talking versus texting.  As many preferred to text, others opted for talking, agreeing face time was included in face to face communication.  I feel talking is better as it helps to get your thoughts across without any confusion in tone, as it seems to happen with mediated communication.  In the video, "A Surprising New Language," John McWhorter explains texting to be a new way of communication with grammar such as LOL.  Texting has structure as it is considered "fingered speech" to show emotion.

Emotion is also an important aspect of this class.  We've read multiple articles discussing the effect emotions have on individuals.  In Paul Mannings' Barista Rants About Stupid Customers at Starbucks, the rant of the service worker shows emotion on both ends, customer and barista.  Although the conversation is fictional, it proves words and emotion go hand in hand.  In mediated conversation, emotion is displayed in multiple ways: emojis, Facebook reactions, and stickers.

The rules for participation in face to face commission communication and mediated communication are very different.  In face to face communication, participation shows how much a person has listened.  With mediated communication, it shows how much a person cares about a topic.  On social media, participation includes comments, likes, and tagged posts.  Different social media sites have different unwritten rules.  These rules help in navigating friendships.  With Facebook, one important rule is to not comment on posts of people you may not know.

All in all, this anthropology class has taught me a lot and I can't wait to teach others. :-)

Creativity

In The New Math of Mashups in The New Yorker, it discusses how the combination of different songs.  With the aif6of Acid Pro, a software which two songs can be looped together creates different songs, sometimes with different meanings as the mashup of Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle" and the Strokes "Hard to Explain," transformed Aguilera's sexy song into a desperate call for help. New media fosters creativity in which certain software creates new and unexpected projects.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds are a relatively new thing.  In my experience, it can help as well as harm an individual but can also be fun.  It is a different way to make friends across the world with the same interests.  It can also be a great learning tool.  In The Advantages and Disadvantages of the Virtual Classroom and the Role of the Teacher it discusses the way some teachers do not feel comfortable using a virtual world to communicate with their students in contrast to Situated Learning in Virtual Worlds and Immersive Simulations as the different kinds of virtual worlds are used to help students learn about multiple sections of subjects.

The pros of virtual worlds is the efficiency of saving money.  As discussed in  The Advantages and Disadvantages of the Virtual Classroom and the Role of the Teacher, students save money as online courses allows students as well as professors to perform academic duties from anywhere.  Using tools such as email is also good as it allows the student access to the professor at all times.

The cons of a virtual can be meeting strangers as that is the concern of teachers in Situated Learning in Virtual Worlds and Immersive Simulations. Another con would be the sense of ergency professors feel comes along with online courses.  As online courses can not apply to every class as discussed in Advantages and Disadvantages of the Virtual Classroom and the Role of the Teacher where a professor used this method of teaching with a science lab course as it did not work.

The comparison in Virtual worlds and face to face interaction in teaching would be that one is more efficient in terms of teaching. Another factor is that face to fave interaction takes away the fear of strangers.

Blog about Twitter

Conversations on twitter compared to blackboard is different in the way you have to tag someone on twitter as opposed to just replying to someone in blackboard without adding the individuals name but instead just write your opinion on a certain topic.  Twitter also restricts you to 160 characters, which isn't a lot in retrospect (they should really extend their word usage)  As for in-class discussion, you can easily "piggy back" off of another person's opinion without knowing their name lol.  I like in class discussions the best because it is what I am most used to.  Although I use different social media networks to communicate with my peers, to do it in a class setting is out of my comfort zone.

Social Networking Sites

I visited facebook, Twitter, instagram, and snapchat as I have  all four these social media sites.  I notice most of them work the same, except snapchat.  Facebook and instagram are great for networking and expanding customers for different companies as snapchat seems to be just for fun.  Because all messages between two parties gets deleted within a few seconds and videos in 24 hours, it makes it hard network in my opinion.  Using a hashtag, anything can be found with facebook, Twitter, and instagram.   Instagram has been a great way get exposure for businesses.  I use facebook the most and I love it.  I, like most people, use it to express my emotions and share the events throughout the day.  You can do this with all media outlets listed, it all depends on your preference.
